Cemetery preservation workshop to be held at Greenwood Cemetery

BELLAIRE — The Bellaire Cemetery Association and Atlas Preservation will co-host a free cemetery preservation workshop for Greenwood (Rose Hill) Cemetery from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 24.

The Bellaire Cemetery Association is looking for volunteers to participate in this workshop. No experience is necessary, and the Bellaire Cemetery Association will provide a free lunch for the volunteers. Atlas Preservation will provide all volunteers with cleaner, water, brushes, scrapers and spray bottles. Atlas Preservation recommends that volunteers bring garden or rubber gloves, protective eyewear like sunglasses, brooms for sweeping grass clippings, water, snacks, a hat, sunscreen, a notebook and a chair for breaks. Volunteers should also wear closed-toe shoes and work clothes that can get dirty. No registration is required.

Volunteers will learn about gravestone cleaning and repair techniques. The day will start with a walking tour around the cemetery and a discussion on historic preservation.

The most common repair techniques will be discussed and performed, including resetting a leaning or sunken gravestone and joining broken gravestone fragments using epoxy, clamps and bracing techniques. If time allows, Atlas Preservation will demonstrate how to rig and lift monuments safely.

Jonathan Appell, CEO of Atlas Preservation, will be leading the workshop.

The free cemetery workshop will be a part of Atlas Preservation’s 48 State Tour.

According to Joanne Cochran Sullivan, Bellaire Cemetery Association trustee, Greenwood Cemetery has 31 acres with over 13,000 burials including more than 600 veteran burials. Greenwood Cemetery was set apart as a burying ground in 1859.

Sullivan said that many of the tombstones need to be cleaned and some reset.

The Bellaire Cemetery Association is also accepting donations to cover the cost of the lunch for volunteers.

Greenwood Cemetery (Rose Hill Cemetery) is located at 57899-57873 High Ridge Road (Belmont County Road 214) in Bellaire.

The organization started the tour on Thursday at Woodland Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia, and the tour will end on Aug. 5 at Windham Cemetery in Windham, Connecticut.
