GSV Society plans lighting ceremony following Oct. 7 football game
BELLAIRE — The Great Stone Viaduct Society scheduled a day of activities to precede the official lighting of the iconic structure that gives this organization its name.
On Oct. 7, trustees of the organization have planned a day of celebration at the viaduct to follow the Bellaire Big Reds home football game against East Liverpool.
All are invited to attend this lighting celebration, activities and lighting ceremony. Those attending should bring their bag or lawn chairs to set up for convenient viewing.
The GSV Society has been pursuing a fundraising campaign to be able to light the historic viaduct for nighttime viewing. Fundraising efforts are still underway.
The board entered into a contract with Erb Electric to develop a lighting plan that will illuminate the north side of the arches along the plaza, and to light the walking path atop the arches of the bridge. In addition, much-needed electrical outlets have been installed to both the walkway and the plaza for use by vendors. This work has been completed by Erb, and the official lighting will take place at 8 p.m. Oct. 7 to highlight the activities scheduled for that day.
A car show is planned for the daylight hours that will commence after the Bellaire football game. Bellaire American Legion Post 52 will be acting as the sponsor for the event, which will take place in the rear parking lot of the Bellaire Health Center. The car show entrance will be at the Guernsey and Crescent streets entrance of the health center. Registration begins at 2 p.m., with the first 30 registrants to receive plaques. Trophies will also be awarded to the Top 20 judge’s choice entrants, and first, second and third place cars. Registration for the car show can be made with Nancy Merryman by email at nancy.merryman@gmx.us or by calling 740-310-2547.
Music and announcements will be provided by DJ “Willie May” throughout the day, with craft booths available on the viaduct plaza. Any craft vendors who wish to obtain space and food vendors seeking setup are welcome and should contact Merryman at the email and phone number above. A special performance of Turn It Out Dance studio dancers will take place on the plaza from 6-7:15 p.m. as they and the community join in this celebration of the bridge lighting.
The official lighting ceremony will cap the day at 8 p.m. Representatives of Erb Electric and the Great Stone Viaduct Society will be on hand to complete the lighting ceremony. Former Ohio state Rep. Jack Cera, who was instrumental in assisting in securing state funding for the viaduct project, will be given the honor of throwing the switch to light the bridge. The GSV anticipates that this historic structure will be lighted on weekends for viewing and photography by the public.
All are welcome to join the celebration. In the event of rain, the alternate date will be Oct. 8 with the same times and schedule.
