Christmas shopping tour in Mount Pleasant

MOUNT PLEASANT –Holiday gift hunters can step back in time and find unique offerings in historic Mount Pleasant next weekend.

Businesses in the village’s Historic District will have their halls decked and doors open for Christmas shoppers Friday and Saturday as the community hosts its Holiday Open House.

Angela Feenerty, owner of the Log House of Mount Pleasant gift shop and studio on the west end of the village with her husband Don, said she regularly holds an open house during the Christmas season and suggested expanding it.

“It’s just something new,” she said. “I just thought maybe other people and organizations would be interested.”

She said the Fiesta House will offer a chance to make craft items. Kim’s Barn will be open, and Maryann Steffl, owner of Second Chance Antiques at 19 Mulberry St., said she will be open, weather permitting. The 1804 Harris-Bone store will also be open.

“We’re going to have some activities,” Feenerty said. “A pleasant shopping experience. People are kind of jumping on, and they’re going to be throughout the historic buildings in the village.”

She added that the area is looking festive.

Also taking part will be the Mount Pleasant Evangelical Friends Church, which will open the historic Samuel Gill House next door at 478 Union St. Lynn Barron, elder and trustee with the church and a member of the historical society, said the Gill House dates from 1846 and has served as a residence and as a boarding house in the 1960s. It is a combination Federalist-Greek Revival style house.

“It is on the registry of National Historic Places,” she said. “There is a summer kitchen. It’s original, built in 1856.”

Barron said the house will be serving soup and sandwiches in the house’s Tea Room for a cozy rest.

“People are welcome to sit awhile in the parlor if they like or stop in for coffee and dessert,” she said. “Our first floor is fully decorated for Christmas, and we will have a pop-up gift shop. It’s a warm and comfortable place and beautifully decorated. People enjoy coming. When they come for a tour of the house, we’ll always find them sitting in the parlor.”

The Mount Pleasant Historical Society gift shop will also be open and offer tours of the Elizabeth House Mansion Museum at 438 Union St., dating from 1835 and once host to a silk mill and cocoonery. Feenerty described the house as the “crown jewel” of Mount Pleasant. It houses historical items for display.

The open house event will be held both days with most shops open from 4-7 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The Gill House will be open earlier for coffee and later for a variety of soups, sliders and desserts.

Tom Haynes, President of the Historical Society of Mount Pleasant, said that in addition to the many items displayed in the gift shop at the Elizabeth House Mansion Museum, there will be a variety of pottery pieces with the community’s name. Paige McElroy will have quilted gifts, table runners, homemade fudge, toffee and cookies in the living quarters of the 1804 Harris-Bone Store.

“The Mount Pleasant shops won’t disappoint those looking for a piece from long ago, something vintage, or something practical like Rada Cutlery and Sunflower dishcloths,” the society noted in a release.

The local Garden Club provides natural flora and greenery and decorates the exterior of Mount Pleasant’s historic buildings each year. The village is on the National Register of Historic Places and designated as a National Historic Landmark District of the Underground Railroad.
