Elec Simon returning to Buckeye Local

CONNORVILLE — Percussionist and Buckeye Local alum Elec Simon will be bringing his message and music back to the district with a series of appearances at local schools next week.

Simon, a Smithfield native and Buckeye Local High School graduate, is scheduled to speak at Buckeye Local Jr./Sr. High School in Connorville at 12:30 p.m. and South Elementary in Tiltonsville at 2 p.m. on Thursday and North Elementary in Brilliant at 9:30 a.m. and West Elementary in Adena at 1:30 p.m. on Friday.

Simon is known for entertaining crowds off Broadway and in traveling shows for “STOMP,” but he has often returned to his roots at Buckeye Local to share his program and display his percussion talents with some audience participation.

Simon took his chance on the Great White Way after departing the University of Akron in 2002, performing on the streets and in subway platforms before becoming part of the hit off-Broadway show.

He then spent more than a decade touring the country and settled in Canton, Ohio, where he decided to give back to the community.

Inspired by his friend’s death as a youth, Simon began speaking in schools and incorporates rhythm into an anti-bullying program by performing with a full band.

Superintendent Coy Sudvary said it will be a tremendous event and that Simon has captivated students with his wisdom, energy and his musical abilities.

“It’s a great opportunity. Elec reached out to us and was going to be back in Ohio. It’s been a few years since he’s been back in the district and he’s such a dynamic speaker,” Sudvary said. “It’s always good for the kids to see his success and hear his positive message.”

Simon will be appearing at other schools in the area this month, including Malvern in Carroll County. In addition to his stage performances, Simon currently has music on iTunes with the song “Learn How to Love.”

He currently resides in Orlando, Florida.
