Brilliant American Legion to hold flag disposal ceremony
BRILLIANT — Brilliant American Legion Post 573 invites the public to witness the annual flag disposal ceremony on Flag Day, June 14, at 7 p.m. at 210 Market St., Brilliant.
The legion will be demonstrating the proper procedure to dispose of a worn, faded, torn or soiled American flag. If you have never witnessed the ceremony for disposal of worn flags, you are encouraged to come out and watch. The ceremony stands as a reminder of what the United States’ flag truly stands for.
The Ceremony for Disposal of Unserviceable Flags is outlined in Resolution No. 440, passed by the 19th National Convention of The American Legion in New York, Sept. 20-23, 1937. The ceremony has been an integral part of American Legion ritual since that date. The purpose of The American Legion in adopting this ceremony was to encourage proper respect for the flag of the United States and to provide for disposal of unserviceable flags in a dignified manner.
Those with worn, faded, torn or soiled flags are encouraged to bring them to the Post at 210 Market St., Brilliant. A receptacle is near the back entrance. During the ceremony, it will be properly disposed of. If you have any questions, call Post 573 at 740-598-3515 or email at BrilliantAL573@gmail.com.
