Gaudiosa becoming a WJU signature event

WHEELING Guests of Wheeling Jesuit University’s Gaudiosa 2015 said this year’s event left them ‘wanting more’ and ‘was even better than last year’s event.’

Gaudiosa 2015, was held on March 28, attracted 330 guests and raised $100,000 for Wheeling Jesuit student scholarships meeting the event fundraising goal and exceeding last year’s total raised by nearly $30,000. Event guests included WJU alumni, community members and friends of the university.

“We had new faces and returning guests this year, and strong support from our sponsors,” said Rev. James Fleming, S.J., WJU President. “I thank everyone for their dedication to this growing event.”

“The variety and style of entertainment involving our talented alumni and River City Brass made this a unique event for Wheeling Jesuit and the community,” said Jasmine Lo, Gaudiosa coordinator.

Gaudiosa started with cocktails in the lobby of the Alma Grace McDonough Center, followed by dinner and entertainment from the River City Brass Band of Pittsburgh, under the director of Dr. James Gourlay, director of instrumental music at WJU.

River City Brass accompanied Chris Bohinski ’13 for “76 Trombones” and “Rock around the Clock” followed by New Martinsville native and business owner John Mensore, WJU Class of 1960 who serenaded the crowd with “My Way” and “Summer Wind.” Re-appearing from the inaugural event last year was Vera Barton-Caro ’82, who sang “Cabaret.” Comedian and YouTube sensation Remy Munasifi, ’03, served as master of ceremonies.

“We are blessed to have raised these funds which will support our students education,” said Fleming. “This is becoming a signature event for Wheeling Jesuit and guests told us they couldn’t wait to bring their friends to Gaudiosa 2016!”

This year, two of WJU’s longest serving Jesuits were honored as co-chairmen. Rev. Walter Buckius, S.J. addressed the audience in a short video clip, while Rev. Jim O’Brien, S.J. traveled to Wheeling from Baltimore to attend.

This year’s Gauidosa committee was chaired by Joe Pangilinan ’88.
