Workshop slated in St. C

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — The Ohio Valley Farmers’ Market will host the event “Farmers’ Market Workshop: Opportunities in Today’s Market” for people interested in developing businesses to capitalize on the trends in the local food movement. The workshop will take place 1-6 p.m. April 22 at the community room of the Ohio Valley Mall in St. Clairsville.

The event will feature the documentary “The Market Gardener’s Tool Kit.” The film explores the techniques used by Jean-Martin and Maude-Helene Fortier, who are the founders of Les Jardins de la Grelinette, an internationally recognized micro-farm famous for its high productivity and profitability using low-tech, high-yield methods of production. From soil preparation to strategies on dealing with insect pests, viewers will discover how this micro-farm manages to generate $150,000 in sales annually without the use of a tractor or heavy machinery. No matter the scale of the project or level of experience, this film offers valuable information that will help make farming operations more efficient and profitable.

Other topics covered will include pasture production, cottage foods and commercial kitchen operations, and marketing strategies presented by guest speakers Eric Rubel of CrossRoads Farm, Jennifer Kocher of Kocher Foods International and Susan West of Lone Oak Farms & Gardens.

The cost of the workshop includes dinner provided by Chef Ryan Butler of Wheeling Brewery Co. Advance reservations are required. Deadline to register is April 8.

Sign-in begins at 12:30 p.m. The program will be held from 1-5 p.m. with dinner following.
