Police respond to fight involving ball bats, brass knuckles

BELLAIRE — One person was taken to Wheeling Hospital after Bellaire police were dispatched to the 800 block of Central Avenue for a report of several people fighting with ball bats. Officers arriving found one subject who was bleeding from the arm and leg and another with wounds to the back of the head and shoulder area.

Bellaire police said the incident stemmed from an earlier “drug deal gone bad” on Wheeling Island in which a subject was allegedly robbed and held at knifepoint. The incident in Bellaire started as retaliation for the Wheeling incident in which windows were knocked out of vehicles and at least four to five combatants were involved.

Wheeling police officials could not be reached Tuesday for comment.

Charges are pending on the individual who was taken to the hospital for assault and criminal damaging. A vehicle belonging to a Wheeling resident was towed from he scene and ball bats, wooden clubs, brass knuckles, a baton, two knives and a garden shovel used as weapons were recovered at the scene.

A report will be forwarded to the Belmont Bounty Prosecutor’s Office for review. Bellaire police were assisted by Bridgeport and Shadyside police departments and emergency medical services.
