The Wheeling YWCA Mini-Con set for Saturday

WHEELING — From noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, the Wheeling YWCA will host the region’s only Mini-Con.

If one didn’t have the luck of attending last year, one may ask, “What’s a Mini-Con?” Essentially, it’s scaled-down version of a comic-con or comic book convention.

This event highlights, showcases and celebrates the culture of comic books, graphic novels, action figures and animation. There will be vendor tables, artists, demonstrations and more.

This year’s celebrity guest at the YWCA Mini-Con will be Rob Garrison, a long-time actor who was born in Wheeling. He has appeared in many film and TV roles such as The Karate Kid 1 and 2, Iron Eagle, Brubaker and MacGyver.

Garrison can be seen on the Web-based YouTube series Cobra Kai. The series is in its third season and has had more than 22 million views.

The Mini-Con will take place on the second floors of the Wheeling YWCA at 1100 Chapline St. Admission is left to the donor’s choice, but there will be plenty to do, see, experience and purchase, organizers said.

There will also be an open panel discussion; the topic is to be announced. There will also be a costume contest; categories include: ages 12 and younger; ages 13-18 years old; ages 18 and older; and overall winner.

Prizes for the winners include: for 12 years of age and younger, a special YWCA Wheeling Surprise Bag; for ages 13-18, two free movie tickets to the Marquee Cinemas at The Highlands; for ages 18 and older, a $25 Sheetz gift card; the Overall Winner, who will be judged on detail, authenticity, and originality, will receive an Xbox One X video game system.
