Ventriloquist, puppet shows set at Moundsville library

MOUNDSVILLE — The Moundsville-Marshall County Public Library will host the Pittsburgh Puppet Works at 11 a.m. Saturday for a special performance of “Destination: Imagination!”

The event is aimed at young children and is free and open to the public.

This show features ventriloquist Gwen Bowman. She and her zany crew members travel around the United States meeting all sorts of comical puppet creatures at each stop along the way. A variety of amusing and educational themes are presented during this imaginary trip, including Nutrition, Animals, Exploration, Fairy tales, Insects, Super Heroes, Foreign Language, Geography and Reading.

The Pittsburgh Puppet Works is a professional puppet troupe that entertains children of all ages. Known for creating and performing “professional, hilarious, toe-tappin’, engaging and all-around catchy puppet productions,” the Pittsburgh Puppet Works is family entertainment with “real character.” The laughs and learning go hand-in-hand and the artistry of the puppets is first-rate.

The “Destination: Imagination” puppet show is an Inquire Within event, with the library receiving support from WQED and Chevron. The Moundsville library is located at the corner of Fifth Street and Tomlinson Avenue. Call 304-845-6911 for more information.

Then on Monday, the nationally acclaimed Stevens Puppets will present two shows of “Goldilocks and the Three Bears.” The first show will be at 11 a.m. at the Moundsville-Marshall County Public Library. The second performance, for the Benwood-McMechen Library, will be held at the Benwood-McMechen Housing Authority’s Kubeck Room, adjacent to the library, starting at 2 p.m. The performances will feature fully jointed hand-carved and painted wooden marionettes masterfully brought to life by professional actors. The programs are suitable for all ages. Both are free and open to the public.

“Goldilocks and the Three Bears” is the latest production by Stevens Puppets. Based on the classic tale, this version is set in an enchanted Alaskan forest and the characters and hand-painted scenery reflect Southeast Alaskan cultural symbols, wildlife and landscape. Stevens Puppets are originally from Middlebury, Indiana and for more than 80 years have been producing marionette productions.

These programs are sponsored by the Evan G. Roberts Trust through BB&T Bank. The Benwood-McMechen Housing Authority is located at 2200 Marshall Street in Benwood.
