Nonprofits prepare for ‘Dishes and Special Wishes’ fundraiser

WHEELING — Two Ohio Valley nonprofits are teaming up for an upcoming fundraiser to help improve people’s lives around the region.

The Soup Kitchen of Greater Wheeling and A Special Wish Ohio Valley announced Wednesday that they will partner to hold the 6th annual “Dishes and Special Wishes” breakfast fundraiser in September.

The sit-down breakfast, which will raise money for both organizations, is set for 7:30 a.m. Sept. 6 at the soup kitchen located at 1610 Eoff St. A Special Wish will also grant a wish at the event.

“This is an event to help thousands of people in the Ohio Valley, and it’s two organizations coming together,” said Becky Shilling-Rodocker, executive director of the soup kitchen. “Everybody can come and enjoy a delicious breakfast and have a really eventful morning.”

The event will also serve as an opportunity for attendees to learn about both organizations, said Alicia Freeman, executive director of A Special Wish. Her organization serves eight counties in the Ohio Valley by granting wishes of children who have been diagnosed with life-threatening disorders.

“We are very excited that this partnership is happening,” Freeman said. “When the soup kitchen reached out to us, it was a no-brainer to say yes.”

Now, the organizations are seeking sponsorships of the event from local businesses. Such fundraisers are one of the few streams of income they have available, Shilling-Rodocker said.

“It’s really important that we come together as a unit in the Ohio Valley,” Freeman said. “There are a lot of wonderful businesses here, but it’s hard when everyone is asking for money from each of them, so to partner on an event like this is huge. Our hope is that the businesses and the community will continue to come together and support two organizations in one event.”

Those interested in attending the event can contact either organization to sign up or can simply pay entry the day of. The proceeds will be split between the two entities, Shilling-Rodocker said.

“This is a great organization, a special wish foundation, and the soup kitchen, they go hand in hand working together to help thousands of families across the Ohio Valley,” Shilling-Rodocker said. “Both of us do not have a steady stream of financial support, so events like this and giving is how we do it.”

The breakfast will also serve as a time for A Special Wish to grant a wish as a surprise for a local family, Freeman said.

“The exciting news other than the fact that we are partnering with the soup kitchen is that we will be granting a wish to a family that is local from the Ohio Valley, and they really don’t know it yet,” she said. “We’re really excited to reveal that at the breakfast.”

St. Clairsville-based A Special Wish Ohio Valley has granted over 150 wishes in the region since 1992, and will continue working with the soup kitchen in the future thanks to the new partnership, according to a letter from the organizations.

“To partner with the soup kitchen, it’s perfect,” Freeman said.
