STEUBENVILLE — Holy Name Cathedral is getting a temporary roof, the Diocese of Steubenville reported Tuesday.

Scott Yarman, director of the Diocese of Steubenville Office of Facilities and Property, said the existing roof is “damaged beyond repair and past its life expectancy,” making it a safety risk.

Interior demolition of the cathedral is anticipated to take place during the winter months, Yarman said.

Bishop Jeffrey M. Monforton said the work gives the diocese “more time to make a decision on whether or not to move forward with the cathedral renovation plans.”

Weather-permittin, the roofing, which carry a $102,000 price tag, should be done in three weeks, and will cover the cathedral, garage and sacristy.

Holy Name Catholic Church, originally built in 1885, was designated the diocesan cathedral in 1945.

It has been closed since 2014 when plans to renew, restore and renovate the structure were originally announced.

Monforton, however, suspended all major expenditures in the diocese in 2018, including the cathedral renovation project, pending the completion of an investigation into the diocesan finance department.
