NEW CUMBERLAND — The key to a rental car was found with a body discovered Sunday in a wooded area along Racetrack Road Hancock County, according to officials.

The rental car — a 2020 Range Rover — had been found damaged by fire in Columbiana County the same day. The key, officials said, was found in the pants pocket of the man, who has been described as Caucasian and in his late 20s or early 30s.

Hancock County Chief Deputy Art Watson said Wednesday afternoon detectives continue to follow leads with the goal of identifying the individual, as well as any suspects.

An autopsy on the body was performed Tuesday in Charleston, with a confirmation that the cause of death was a gunshot to the head. Hancock County detectives were on hand to observe the autopsy.

No other information was released regarding the autopsy, and it could be months before toxicology results come back, Watson added.

Columbiana County Sheriff’s deputies responded shortly after midnight Sunday to McIntosh Road in Madison Township to investigate reports of a car on fire. Upon arrival, deputies found the fire-damaged Range Rover, which bore New York license plates and was owned by Enterprise.

Hancock County deputies were called to Racetrack Road just after 4:30 p.m., Sunday, reporting the discovery of the body, in an area approximately 70 yards off the road.

An alert was issued to surrounding jurisdictions concerning the vehicle.
