WPHS To Remain Closed Monday and Tuesday

WHEELING — Wheeling Park High School will remain closed Monday and Tuesday to in-person learning — with students already off on Wednesday for a scheduled remote day — as school officials continue to address COVID cases at the school.

WPHS was closed all this week after three positive cases were reported there last week — two students and a staff member. Two additional positive cases came this week. Many students and staff have been quarantined over the past week due to contract tracing.

“We will be going remote on Monday and Tuesday, “ Superintendent Rick Jones said Friday. “We’re always remote on Wednesday. And we’re going to reassess earlier in the week to see what we are going to do on Thursday and Friday depending on the situation.”

Jones noted the two new positive cases on Wednesday, and both were in the same household. One of the students is a remote student who wasn’t in the school building.

Jones said there will be no changes in athletics, and all contests scheduled will continue to take place for now.

The West Virginia Department of Education puts out a new COVID-19 school map on Saturday evening, and plans could change based on the department’s assessments, according to Jones.

He doesn’t foresee any changes to Ohio County’s “green” status on the map, though.

“If nothing changes, we will be in-person (for classes) on Thursday and Friday,” Jones said.

Also closed this week following a report of a positive COVID test for an employee was the Soup Kitchen of Greater Wheeling.

Executive Director Becky Shilling-Rodocker said the soup kitchen will resume its curbside distribution of food items on Monday.
