One person killed in Hopedale crash

HOPEDALE — The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a two-vehicle crash that left one person dead Wednesday afternoon.

Frederick Loyd, 75, of Columbus, Ohio, was pronounced dead Wednesday evening due to injuries sustained in the crash.

The fatal accident occurred at about 2:30 p.m. on U.S. 22 in Hopedale. According to the OSHP, 51-year-old Mark Kovach of Uhrichsville was traveling west on U.S. 22 when he crossed the centerline, striking Loyd’s vehicle, which was traveling in the eastbound lane.

Sgt. R.J. Bodo of the patrol’s Steubenville Post said Loyd was transported to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in PIttsburgh by a STAT Medevac helicopter. He succumbed to his injuries at that facility.

Kovach was transported to Harrison Community Hospital by Hopedale EMS for non-life-threatening injuries.

Bodo said there was no outside factor that contributed to the accident.

“There was no impairment or anything like that,” he said.

Although the collision remains under investigation at this time, Bodo said Kovach likely will be cited for the incident.

“Charges will probably be filed once we finish our investigation and speak with the Harrison County Prosecutor’s Office, but some type of citation will be issued at some point,” he said.

The accident closed U.S. 22 outside of Cadiz in both directions for around two hours Wednesday.
