Bridgeport school board reorganizes

BRIDGEPORT — Nearly a quarter of a century ago, former Bridgeport Board of Education member Jeff Grandstaff told Don Cash he should run for an open seat on the board. As they say, the rest is history.

Twenty-four years later, Cash was elected as the board president Wednesday night during the reorganizational meeting held in the administration building. It is the fifth time Cash has been selected to the post.

Board member Jerry Moore nominated Cash, with board member Kori Rosnick seconding the motion.

It was unanimously approved, 4-0, with Cash abstaining.

“It’s a good way to give back. I have lived in the district my entire life. I went to school here,” the Class of 1975 member said.

“We’ve had a lot of good things happen during my tenure,” he said. “We built the new school campus and now we’ve got a new grandstand for our football field for next season.”

Regarding his goals for the district, Cash said, “Obviously getting through COVID and getting things back to normal as far as kids going to school and sports being played in front of fans. That’s my goal.”

Voted in as vice president was Jodi Harkness. She was nominated by Cash and abstained from the vote.

Treasurer Eric Meininger handed out committee assignments to the five-member board. They are as follows:

∫ Textbooks, Technology and Software — Cash and Rosnick;

∫ Labor/Management — Harkness and Shirleann Murad;

∫ Athletic Board — Cash and Moore;

∫ Finance — Harkness and Rosnick;

∫ Building and Grounds — Cash and Rosnick;

∫ Personnel — Rosnick and Murad;

∫ Transportation — Harkness and Cash;

∫ Negotiations/Classified — Harkness and Cash;

∫ Negotiations/Certified — Moore and Murad;

∫ Insurance — Murad and Rosnick;

∫ Safety/Recreation — Harkness and Moore.
