A day for the champions

The Ohio Valley Mall to honor Wheeling Park student athletes

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — The Ohio Valley Mall will honor two Wheeling Park High School athletic teams with a victory rally Thursday afternoon.

During the fall season, two of the high school’s athletic teams secured state championships. In November, the girls soccer team captured first place in Class AAA with a 1-0 victory over Parkersburg South, according to a release from the mall. A month earlier, the Wheeling Park golf team won its sixth state title after beating George Washington 486-489.

Joe Bell, spokesman for the mall’s parent company Cafaro Co., said the mall will honor the student athletes with a victory rally in celebration of their achievements.

“It’s amazing, they both won the state championship,” he said. “We are really happy to honor these students for their incredible achievements,” he said.

The event will take place at 3 p.m. Thursday in the mall’s center court. The students, coaches and members of the school administration will provide a recap of the teams’ seasons and then each athlete will be individually recognized.

Following the student recognitions, the Cafaro Foundation will present a donation to Wheeling Park High School. Bell said the amount will not be disclosed until the event.

“The donation amount is always a surprise,” he said.

What the money is spent on is left to the school’s discretion. Bell said in the past when the Cafaro Foundation has made donations to schools, the funds have been used to purchase athletic equipment, new computers and make facility improvements.

“We leave it to the discretion of the school’s administration, whatever they would like to do with it,” he said.

The mall had planned to honor the students immediately after the championships, however due to the holidays and scheduling conflicts the event was postponed until now, Bell said.

Bell said the Cafaro Co. is thrilled to be able to honor these students and celebrate their athletic achievements.

“We’re very happy to do it. The owners of our company feel very strongly about recognizing student athletes whenever they achieve something. It’s something we like to do, and will continue to do in the future,” he said.

The mall is located on I-70, exit 218 to Mall Road in St. Clairsville. It features more than 100 retailers, restaurants and hotels.
