Alpha Tavern adds spice via Chef Huffman

WHEELING — The Alpha Tavern, located at 50 Carmel Road in the historic Woodsdale neighborhood, announces the addition of Chef Alan Huffman to its vibrant team.

Huffman owned the Spicy Gringo restaurant in Weirton before moving to the Alpha. The restaurant will feature Huffman’s menu via “Tijuana Tuesdays.”

“We’re very pleased to welcome Alan to our team,” said Alpha co-owner Beau Catalano. “He’s from the Ohio Valley, but brings a vast knowledge from his days in San Diego.”

Huffman was born and raised in New Cumberland in Hancock County, but spent 18 years in San Diego, where he learned and perfected Baja Mexican cuisine.

He returned to the valley in 2011, opened Spicy Gringo’s in Wellsburg and then expanded into a newer space in Weirton through the end of 2020.

“COVID impacted our business there,” Huffman said. “But I’m excited about this opportunity with the Alpha Tavern and the ability to continue my focus on Baja Mexican cuisine. I’m sure Wheeling will love it.”
