Cadiz resident killed in Harrison County crash on U.S. 22

HOPEDALE — The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a multi-vehicle accident in which one person died Monday afternoon in Green Township.

Shirley Ledfors, 73, of Cadiz was pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries sustained in the crash.

Trooper Darren Johnson, of the OSHP Steubenville Post, said the fatal accident occurred just after noon on U.S. 22 in Hopedale.

Ledfors, who was driving a 2009 Hyundai Sonata, was traveling westbound when she came to a stop in an attempt to turn south onto Harrison County 13. Prior to making the turn, Ledfors was struck from behind by a 2011 Freighliner van driven by 36-year-old Jared Stutzman of Baltic, Ohio.

was then pushed into oncoming traffic, where she was struck by a second vehicle — a commercial truck — traveling east on U.S. 22. The truck was being driven by Douglas Robey, 26, of Martins Ferry.

Both Stutzman and Robey were treated at the scene for minor injuries before being released, Johnson said.

Johnson said drugs and alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors in the accident.

“We do not believe there were issues of impairment,” he said.

As of Monday, no one has been cited for the accident; however, the incident remains under investigation.

“The investigation is pending. There are possible charges to come,” Johnson said.

The accident closed U.S. 22, east of Cadiz, in both directions for approximately three hours.

Several local agencies were on scene, including Hopedale Fire Department and EMS, Harrison County Sheriff’s Office and the Ohio Department of Transportation.
