Colerain fire no longer considered suspicious

By Carri Graham 2 min read

COLERAIN -- Following investigation of a fire that occurred early Sunday in Colerain Township, officials say it is no longer considered suspicious.

On Monday, Colerain Volunteer Fire Company Assistant Chief Ty Wilson said the state fire marshal concluded the fire’s cause was likely mechanical failure of an involved vehicle.

“It’s going to be some type of mechanical failure but we’re probably not going to be able to pinpoint, so we’re going to leave it as undetermined but it’s no longer a suspicious fire,” he said.

The Colerain department, with assistance from Barton and Sunset Heights fire departments, responded to the fire around 5 a.m. Sunday at the Home City Ice facility located along Sharon Road. Wilson said seven of the company’s delivery trucks had caught fire and were engulfed when crews arrived. It took them nearly three hours to extinguish the flames, he said.

Wilson said it appears that only one of the vehicles had initially caught fire and the flames spread to other vehicles that were lined up beside it. Five of the box trucks are reported to be total losses, while two others sustained damage. The facility itself was not damaged.

“They (Home City Ice) are still working their normal operations today,” he said Monday.

Wilson said no one was injured in the blaze.

U.S. 250 and Sharon Road were both temporarily closed while firefighters worked to extinguish the flames. The roads were reopened around 7:30 a.m. Sunday.
