Drug, gun charges follow arrest in St. C.

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — City police reported arresting a man for drugs and weapons offenses after a brief foot pursuit early Tuesday morning.

William Hinton, 48, of 1338 Lakeview Road, Cleveland is facing charges of having weapons while under disability, improperly handling a weapon and carrying a concealed weapon, obstructing justice, tampering with evidence and possession of marijuana.

According to the incident report, Patrolman T.J. Weyand saw Hinton’s vehicle headed west on Main Street without an operating registration plate light. He initiated a traffic stop as Hinton turned onto Woodrow Avenue from South Sugar Street in front of St. Clairsville High School.

Weyand reported smelling marijuana coming from the vehicle and seeing a bag of the substance in the center console.

Upon being questioned, Hinton allegedly attempted to flee but was apprehended by Weyand.

“William admitted that he had marijuana. I then began searching William’s person and located large stacks of various cash in both front pants pockets,” Weyand states in his report. “A firearm was located directly where William had ran onto the hillside.”

The officer states that Hinton said he threw the gun down as he was running.

A search of the vehicle reportedly revealed several hollowed-out locations in the seats and interior.
