WOODSFIELD — The Monroe Theatre, in partnership with the Woodsfield Kiwanis Club, will hold its second annual Monroe Has Talent Youth Edition featuring the area’s youth next month.

The event is set for 7 p.m. March 20 at the theater in Woodsfield.

Mick Schumacher, county commissioner and member of the arts council, said event organizers are uncertain at this point how the event will be held this year. However, they are hoping to share the program virtually with limited seating available for the participants’ family members. All of the COVID-19 guidelines will be in place, he said.

Schumacher said all students in kindergarten through 12th grade who live in the Switzerland of Ohio Local School District can participate in the talent show.

“They don’t have to be attending a Switzerland of Ohio school, they just have to reside in the school district,” he said.

Schumacher said students attending schools in surrounding counties may participate so long as they reside in the county’s school district.

Contestants will be divided into two age groups — 5- to 12-year-olds and 13- to 20-year-olds. Then, depending on the contestant’s talent, they will be divided into various categories including dance, vocal, instrumental and other. Schumacher said all talents are welcome to participate.

First-place winners of each category will be awarded cash prizes, along with a trophy, plaque or medal. Second- and third-prize winners will receive a trophy, plaque or medal.

Schumacher said organizers are hoping for a good turnout this year. Last year, the theater’s first youth talent show showcased the talents of around 16 of the area’s youth.

Those interested in participating in the talent show can complete an application listed on the theater’s Facebook page or pick one up at the theater’s box office. The applications will also be available in some of the district’s schools.

“The school’s student counselors should have the applications on hand in the grade schools and high schools,” he said.

Applications must be submitted to the theater by 3 p.m. March 1.
