Another bomb threat found at Martins Ferry elementary school

MARTINS FERRY — Ayers Elementary School students were again evacuated to the high/middle school building Monday after another threatening message was found at the grade school.

According to a message sent to parents from Superintendent Jim Fogle at about 2 p.m. Monday, the message was found in an elementary school restroom.

“All students have been relocated to the high school/middle school building for precautionary measures as the elementary building is being swept by the Martins Ferry Police Department,” Fogle said. “Any elementary student pick-ups will take place at the high school event entrance. Buses will run their regular schedule.”

He did not mention what the message stated. However, Police Chief John McFarland said the message was a bomb threat. He believes the message was written by a child.

“It was written in crayon this time,” McFarland said.

At about 5 p.m. Monday, Fogle sent out another message to parents stating the building had been cleared by Martins Ferry police, and that classes were scheduled to resume in person today.

A similar situation occurred at the school on Feb. 8 after messages were written on two bathroom stalls in black marker. Those messages also indicated a bomb threat. One stated, “I left a bom(b). U have 15 minutes” and the other stated, “I left a bomb.”

The school investigated the situation and a student admitted to writing the messages. Fogle at that time said the student would be dealt with in accordance with board of education guidelines. He declined to disclose what kind of punishment the student received or the reason for the student’s action.

During the February incident, in addition to searches by Martins Ferry police, a bomb-sniffing dog from Zanesville, Ohio, was brought to the school. Nothing was found.
