At-home COVID tests now available at Cadiz library

CADIZ — Harrison County residents will have the opportunity to test themselves for the coronavirus from the comfort of their home now that the Puskarich Public Library is offering free at-home COVID-19 test kits to residents.

Library Director Sandi Thompson made the announcement during Wednesday’s Harrison County Board of Commissioners meeting. She said the library has 400 at-home test kits available for pick-up.

The tests were provided to the library through the Ohio Department of Health.

The rapid testing kits are self-administered and provide results within minutes, Thompson said.

The kits work through an app that the individual must download onto their smartphone, tablet or computer.

“You download an app, then the app has a telehealth specialist that will help you walk through the steps on how to administer the test,” she said.

The test result will appear directly on the app — a green result indicates a negative test result, while red indicates a positive result. The negative results can then be used to inform schools of students returning to the class, for work requirements or for travel, Thompson said.

“It makes this test really convenient, and you get the results in a couple of minutes,” she said.

Thompson said although the tests are self-administered, the testing is guided by a specialist via the app. The tests are very reliable, she added.

There are few testing facilities available for Harrison County residents, Thompson said. Having more access to testing is essential, she said.

“This is a really great service for our communities to be able to provide more ready access to tests,” she said.

Garen Rhome, administrator of the county health department, said testing is key to identifying virus positive individuals and slowing the spread.

“It’s a really good thing for the community to have access to,” he said. “We’re grateful for the Ohio Department of Health and the library system for getting it out to our community.”

Anyone in need of a test kit must call ahead to arrange pick-up. Staff will bring the test out to the individual’s vehicle upon arrival.

Those interested in receiving a free test should call 740-942-2623. The library, located at 200 E. Market St., is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.
