Martins Ferry City Council plans spring cleanup for March 27

MARTINS FERRY — The city is gearing up for another spring cleanup on March 27 near the former city garage property on First Street.

Martins Ferry City Council President Kristine Davis said Mayor John Davies made the announcement about the cleanup during this week’s council meeting on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, JB Green Team also has slated several cleanups across townships in Belmont County.

The Martins Ferry city cleanup is set for 8 a.m. to noon March 27 for city residents only. Residents can bring their unwanted household materials to the site for disposal into dumpsters.

No hazardous materials can be disposed of including paint, chemicals, tires or TVs.

“There are also plans for two more cleanups: in July and October. The dates will be announced later,” she said.

Davis noted that council did not approve any legislation, but did OK use of City Park and surrounding streets for a baseball opening day parade by the Martins Ferry Civics Association on April 7.

Council also approved Grace Presbyterian Church’s use of City Park for a church-related event on June 13.

Council’s finance committee also set a meeting for 5:30 p.m. March 16 to discuss the budget.

The mayor also informed council that the city is now selling about 20 million gallons of water per month to the village of Bridgeport, she said.

Bridgeport had to start buying water from Martins Ferry after it was determined some village water wells were contaminated. A new waterline and pump house had to be connected to Bridgeport’s line first. That project was completed recently.
