ST. CLAIRSVILLE — The hard work of a local family is paying off for Shriners Hospitals.

The purpose of Osiris Shriners is to raise funds for Shriners Hospitals. Rebecca Greenwood Raines, the Osiris Shrine 2021 First Lady, took on the project of raising funds for research on a patch that is used on the brain after corrective surgery for Chiari Malformation, a structural skull and cerebellum defect with which Raines was born.

Doctors “put a patch over the dura mater, and I had a horrible reaction to the patch which almost killed me,” Raines said.

Research will determine which patch is better to use in saving young lives.

At a recent meeting of Osiris Shrine, a check in the amount of $8,655 was presented to Potentate John Paglialunga III to be used toward this research.

The funds raised to date were generated through the work of John’s family, Joyce and John Paglialunga Sr. and their daughter Jeana Paglialunga, who owns From Past to Present Quilt Shop in St. Clairsville.

When the COVID-19 pandemic started, the family got busy making face masks and decided to donate 100 percent of the money raised through their sales toward Raines’ project.

Anyone who wishes to participate in this fundraiser is invited to stop at From Past to Present Quilt Shop on Main Street in St. Clairsville, where a large variety of masks can be purchased.
