Suspect in Wheeling Island shooting now wanted for murder

The suspect in a January shooting on Wheeling Island is now wanted for murder after the victim died Thursday evening.

The Wheeling Police Department is now looking for 19-year-old Niyajah A. Hales for the murder of Michael J. Jackson, 41, of Wheeling. Jackson, who was shot on Jan. 28 at the VooDoo Lounge on Wheeling Island, died Thursday evening in Morgantown’s Ruby Memorial Hospital, WPD said.

Hales is a Black male with black hair and brown eyes, standing 6 feet tall and weighing 160 pounds. He originally is from New York.

WPD said Hales should be considered armed and dangerous.

In February, police arrested another suspect in the shooting, Brian Steele, aka Brian Perez, 36, whose address is listed as being a homeless resident of Wheeling.

According to WPD, video surveillance footage showed that around midnight Jan. 28, a bar fight broke out at the establishment, which led to two men leaving the building.

A shot was fired through the door of the building, police said, breaking the glass and hitting the bar, nearly shooting the bar manager and hitting another patron, who was hospitalized.

Steele has been charged with wanton endangerment with a firearm, and prohibited person in possession of a firearm. A police spokesman said no further charges for Steele were planned.

The department said anyone with information on Hales’ whereabouts should call police at 304-234-3664, submit a crime tip at wheelingwv.gov/crimetip or call the new Crime Stoppers Upper Ohio Valley tip line at 877-TIPS4US.
