WOODSFIELD — Whether you need balsamic vinegar, a new washing machine, a greeting card or ammunition, in Woodsfield you can find it in a place you might not expect — the local hardware store.
Modern Home & Hardware has been operating in the village since 1976, and today it offers a wide variety of merchandise to meet nearly every need.
Darin Brown, marketing director, said the core of the business is a Do It Best hardware dealership, but it also includes a Hallmark store, a Stihl dealership, Head Fur The Hills Outfitters, a fishing department with Bass Pro Shops merchandise, a variety of name-brand appliances and a connected Little Caesar’s Pizza shop.
Owner Lynn Reusser bought the former Helbling’s Hardware on Main Street 45 years ago and immediately began to adapt and expand. The business is now located at 104 S. Sycamore St.
“It’s always been more than just a hardware store … ,” Brown said. “The main emphasis here is that, being in a small town, we want to be able to offer a full variety of products so people can get what they need in Woodsfield.”
Brown pointed out there are no appliance stores in nearby communities such as Barnesville or Caldwell.
Modern Home & Hardware offers home appliances so that area residents don’t have to drive to more distant cities such as Wheeling, Marietta, Ohio, or Parkersburg, West Virginia, to replace a broken refrigerator or to update their clothes dryer.
The store also carries Benjamin Moore “super high quality” paint, Brown said, as well as Do It Best and Valspar lines. He said the “one-stop-shop” offers Big Green Egg grills, which are ceramic and use natural charcoal to cook healthier, great tasting meals.
Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Brown noted, supply chains have been disrupted. He said the gun department, an independent retailer, has worked hard to remain stocked with firearms and ammunition. The same is true on the hardware side, where a “run on plastics” has made it challenging to keep the pipe yard stocked with culverts and water and gas lines. But, the stoe’s staff works with a variety of vendors to help ensure supplies do not run short.
Toys and electronics help round out the inventory. Although no longer affiliated with Radio Shack, Brown said the store provides a wide variety of electronic items including computer components.
Many employees, such as 24-year veteran Sharon Weber, have worked for the business for decades. And they do their best to make customers feel welcome and satisfied.
“Being in a small town and being a family-owned business, we want to emphasize customer service,” Brown noted. “We tell our employees to always ask visitors if they need help and to thank them for their purchase. We want to offer all our customers a great experience.”
