Truck driver sustains minor injuries in accident

BRIDGEPORT — The driver of a semi truck sustained minor injuries after his truck jackknifed into the opposite lane of traffic Thursday morning on I-470 westbound.

The single-vehicle accident happened around 6 a.m. near mile marker 5. Sgt. Brian Hawkins of the Ohio State Highway Patrol St. Clairsville Post said the semi truck was traveling east when the driver attempted to switch lanes. The tractor-trailer traveled off the left side of the roadway, striking the median and ending up in the westbound lane where it jackniffed before coming to a stop. The cause of the accident is unknown at this time, he said.

Hawkins said the driver was transported to East Ohio Regional Hospital in Martins Ferry with minor injuries. He said no other vehicles were involved in the accident.

The accident caused a diesel fuel spill on the roadway. Belmont County Emergency Management Agency was notified and responded to the scene. While the cleanup was underway, two of three westbound lanes were closed.

Hawkins said the OSHP was on scene until around 9:30 a.m. when the road was fully reopened to traffic.

Carlton Whatley, 50, of McDonough, Georgia, the driver of the semi truck, was cited for failure to control.
