Plenty to do at Piatt Park

WOODSFIELD — Residents looking to spend some time outdoors this summer can make their way to Piatt Park, a 119-acre site that features multiple hiking trails, scenic views, a camping and picnic area, and playground.

Monroe County Park District Director Mark Gallagher said the park includes a 1.3-mile loop trail, the park’s original trail, that will take people past a waterfall, gorge and natural spring. He said it’s a beautiful area with plenty of wildlife and scenic views.

“It has unique land features like the gorge. It’s a really scenic area,” he added.

Gallagher said there are more than a dozen waterfalls in the gorge area of the park.

The park board recently made some upgrades with the help of a group of volunteers who installed new walkways, platforms and stairs at the upper and lower fall areas, new slip resistant metal stair treads on the 114 steps that lead into the gorge and are working to expand the natural swimming hole at the lower falls.

The east rim trail can be challenging due to steep sections in the terrain, Gallagher said.

“It’s a more difficult trail. With the new stair trails it provides easier access,” he said.

Gallagher said there are a total of three trials — the original trail, blue trail and the east rim trail.

“The original trail goes down to the overhangs and gorge area; there’s one that goes to the east rim — our newest trail — and there’s one called the blue trail that connects to the original trail,” he said.

If the natural spring’s water is down, Gallagher said hikers can also walk through the gorge itself.

The park also offers camping for recreational vehicles and primitive campers. The camping area has 10 camping sites available. Gallagher said there are both water and electric hookups at each site along with fire pit rings. He said there are also picnic shelter house areas available which have handicap accessible restrooms and showers. The shelter houses are available on a first come, first served basis and also by reservation.

Near the picnic area there is a playground where children can play.
