Hollister Parry House Museum in rolling tour

WOODSFIELD — The Hollister Parry House Museum in Woodsfield will have some visitors rolling by this fall.

Joyce Wiggins, president of the Monroe County Historical Society said the drivers will be welcome.

“We are a part of the Fall Auto Tour Oct. 2, and we are going to do outside drive-by exhibits — something we’ve never tried before.

“We’re just looking ahead, just in case something goes down with COVID,” she said. “If the tour turns into totally drive-by, we’ll be ready for that.”

The tour will be from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

“We have not had a fall tour in Monroe County for several years. This is kind of a revitalization of the fall tour. We’ve been on it a couple times before,” she said. “It’s not a new thing for us, but I wanted to add to that.”

Wiggins said models dressed with a theme of the Roaring ’20s will be featured on the porch.

There will be flappers and other characters from the time period.

Visitors will also learn about the building materials used in local buildings.

“The stone school is also on the loop. We have a circle drive that goes all the way around the loop.

“The stone school is sandstone, and so there’ll be some information and exhibits about sandstone,” Wiggins said.

“The last building on the property is a cooperative dairy, which will just be viewed from the outside, but there’ll be some explanation of that, too,” she said.

Wiggins is hoping for a high turnout.

“I think the last time we were on, we had 200 cars,” she said. “That was at least 10 years ago. Probably more like 15 years ago. …

“I think the whole tour is geared to people being able to stay in their car or visit a site outdoors instead of going in buildings, so we’re anticipating a pretty good turnout if the weather is good. The fall foliage is beautiful that time of year.”

She said museum and senior services organizers have maintained operations during the pandemic.

“As far as what we’ve done this summer, we’ve had many openings at the museum and also here in our office at the senior center, and we’ve just limited it to one family or one carload at a time. So that we didn’t mix groups in case of contamination. We’ve been open and up and running this summer and many, many people have been in to research their ancestors. They come in to the office here to do that in the senior center in the records room, and then often times when there’s a larger group like six or eight we meet with them in the museum, at the big dining room table that holds 20 so we can spread out a little bit farther. We’ve done that several times and it’s been an interesting summer,” she said.

Wiggins said the center and museum has had visitors from Colorado, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and many counties across Ohio.

The museum is located at 217 Eastern Ave, Woodsfield. Brochures for the tour are available at the Monroe Theatre at 78 E Court St.

The museum will also have an antique farm equipment building at the Monroe County Fair, Aug. 23 to Aug. 28.
