New flag disposal box now available in Woodsfield in Monroe County

WOODSFIELD — In partnership with the National Association of Counties and the County Commissioners Association of Ohio, Monroe County has installed a flag retirement box, at no cost to the county, at the Monroe County Courthouse. “We are pleased to provide these flag retirement boxes. Helping residents properly dispose of worn U.S. flags is consistent with our commitment to public service and community engagement,” said NACo President Commissioner Larry Johns of DeKalb County, Georgia.

The United States Flag Code prescribes flag etiquette as everything from flying it near other flags to instructions on how to raise and lower it.

“The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem of display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning,” the code states.

Flags should be folded respectfully before being placed in the box which is located inside the side entrance door of the courthouse.

Members of the American Legion Post 87 will be responsible for the proper disposal of the worn flags. Flags will be picked up on the first of each month and will be retired on Flag Day, June 14, 2022. The public will be invited to attend the ceremony at the post in Woodsfield.
