MARTINS FERRY — A family-owned and operated shop in the Purple City is known for its specialty products, which are homemade at the shop.

Jacob & Sons Quality Meats has been in business in Martins Ferry since 1981, providing residents with weekly specials, homemade sausages, beef, poultry, cheese, seasonings and more. Lance Jacob, co-owner of the store along with his brothers Tim and Michael, said the shop is a bit different from a typical grocer.

“We have different things that you typically can’t get at a grocery store,” he said.

Jacob said the business has its own smokehouse where he and his brothers smoke kielbasa and hams during the holiday seasons.

He said their specialty is sausage, which they currently have in more than 40 different flavors. Some of the most popular flavors include the mild garlic and mild hot Italian seasoning.

“We’re always adding more flavors to our list,” he added.

Other store specialties include burger meat, seasonings and cheese selection.

Jacob said they have around 15 different value boxes available most of the time that provide customers with price savings.

He said some of the boxes include all of one type of item such as all beef, pork or poultry, and there are variety boxes that have all three.

There are also various box sizes, whether to feed a larger family or a small family.

Each week, the meat shop offers specials that can be found on its Facebook page or in the lobby of the store. Jacob said they usually have three to four specials at a time.

The most recent specials are bone-in-pork chops, T-bone steaks and English beef roasts, all priced by the pound.

The store offers convenient payment methods and has delivery options for those who prefer to remain at home instead of venturing to the shop. He said the delivery option has been great for residents amid the pandemic; however, there is a minimum purchase amount required to be eligible for delivery.

Jacob & Sons is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday and 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at 306 Center St., Martins Ferry.
