MARTINS FERRY — The city now has a dog groomer, and the business owner is ready to help get pups ready for summer weather.

Hannah’s Pretty Pawz is Martins Ferry’s newest business and its only dog grooming facility. The new shop just opened its doors early last month. Owner Hannah Crain said her love for animals and interest in maintaining her own dogs’ coats sparked her to open the shop, which is located below the Redwood Veterinary Hospital on South Fifth Street.

While on vacation in Alabama and trying to decide what career path she wanted to follow, Crain said she noticed an array of grooming businesses and thought the field checked a lot of boxes. When she returned from the trip, she got to work. She said she already had experience with grooming her own pets and was able to train with a groomer in St. Clairsville, where she discovered her love for the job.

Crain said her mother, Tammy Slivka, is a vet tech at Redwood, which led to the partnership between the vet hospital and the groomer. The business entrance is located around the back side of the hospital. She said it has been mutually beneficial for both businesses.

“She’s (Dr. Alyssa Wood) gaining clientele and I’m gaining clientele from her. It’s been really great,” she said.

Also, she said she wanted to fill a need in the community, as there were no dog groomers in the city.

Crain said she accepts dogs of all sizes but only dogs for the time being. She said a grooming includes a bath, blow dry, hair cut, nail trim and file, ear cleaning and anal gland expression. For shorter-haired dogs that are not in need of a trim, just a bath, she can do that as well. Prices vary depending on the size of the pooch, as does the time it takes to complete the service. She said it typically takes around 45 minutes for a smaller dog.

“I’m an animal lover and I will baby your dog,” she said.
