Ghost Tours beginning at Monroe Theatre

WOODSFIELD — Want to find out what lies in the dark at the historic Monroe Theatre?

Now you have the chance to do so by attending one of the theater’s Flashlight Ghost Tours.

Those who choose to participate in the tour will be left alone for the night, with the power shut down, and given the opportunity to explore the potentially “haunted” building while being on the lookout for ghostly encounters.

Last month, the Belmont County Spirit Seekers kicked things off by conducting a paranormal investigation of the property where multiple unexplained sights and sounds were caught on their equipment.

Mick Schumacher, a Monroe County commissioner and member of the Monroe County Arts Council, said the first ghost tour is set for this weekend with more to follow. He said the explorations and findings that attendees discover will be added to what the Spirit Seekers began.

“There were several things that we found, nothing by the naked eye or ear but they (Spirit Seekers) did on their paranormal recorders, cams and different things that they had. They picked up audio and some visual,” he added.

Rick Brown, production manager for the theater, said evidence presented by the Spirit Seekers was “pretty cool.” The team caught a voice on the second floor that responded “Vincent” when asked who was present.

“The Fliehman family that originally owned the theater, they’re granddaughter attended the reveal where they showed their findings. When she heard them say that, she said, ‘Let me make a phone call.’ So she called her aunt. Well back in the ’50s there was a man whose first name was Vincent that ran projectors,” he said.

There were a couple other unknown voice recordings caught by the seekers as well. Brown said the women with the BCSS explained that the theater does appear to have a “haunting situation.”

“They said, ‘If you believe it, you have a classic haunting situation here.’ She said that basically what’s here is happy and is just working right along with us daily. It’s like a residual haunting type of thing and she said there’s no danger, and told us to protect that,” he said.

During the ghost tours, attendees will first view a film that includes background information on the theater, firsthand encounter testimonies, and the Spirit Seekers’ findings.

“We put together an 18-minute video. … It helps put them in the mood for ghost hunting,” he said.

Brown said attendees will be shown the exits and provided safety precautions. Groups can then rent a paranormal tool kit that includes a REM (radiating electromagneticity) pod, a ghost box, laser grid, EMF (electromagnetic field radiating) detector and other ghost hunting equipment. He said it’s the exact box that Zax Bagans utilizes on the television show Ghost Hunters.

Theater employees will then shut down the power to the building, leaving groups of ghost hunters to explore on their own.

There are a couple rules. Brown said they do not allow Ouija boards and groups are not allowed to perform seances — two things recommended by the BCSS in order to keep out dark spirits.

Brown said he does believe there are spirits present at the theater, though it does not bother him.

Those interested in attending future tour dates can purchase tickets at monroetheatretickets.com. Brown said individual parties interested in private tours can schedule dates by calling the theater at 740-213-5757.
