SARDIS — A teen was killed in a riding mower accident late Friday morning in Monroe County.

Sheriff Charles Black said a 13-year-old boy was mowing the grass at the Apostolic Christian Church Fellowship Center along Ohio 255, something he had previously done, when the riding mower tipped over the embankment and pinned the juvenile underneath the equipment.

The sheriff’s office received a call from a neighboring resident regarding an accident at around 11:20 a.m.

“The neighbor heard the screams and went over there. … He (the teen) was over an embankment. When the neighbor got there, the tractor was on top of him and he was pinned underneath it,” Black said.

Those at the scene were able to remove the tractor from the teen and rushed him to the Sardis Emergency Squad 5. Sardis EMS then transported the boy to WVU Medicine Wetzel County Hospital in New Martinsville, where he was pronounced dead.
