Man accused of serial burglary along U.S. 40

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — A man is facing charges following a series of burglaries along U.S. 40 in mid-December.

Kristopher Paul Coburn, 47, whose address is listed as 1412 Baltimore St., Wheeling in court records, was arraigned Monday before Belmont County Common Pleas Judge John Vavra. His plea agreement deadline was set for Jan. 30 and his trial Feb. 14.

He is lodged in the Belmont County Jail in lieu of $20,000 bond.

Belmont County Prosecutor Kevin Flanagan said Coburn faces three charges of third-degree felony burglary and one count of fourth-degree felony attempted burglary. He said there were six incidents in an area west of Lansing and east of St. Clairsville.

“Three were indicted, two the investigation is still pending, and one was indicted as an attempted burglary. They were all daytime burglaries,” Flanagan said, adding he believed no one was at home during the alleged offenses. “The allegation is mostly tools and jewelry (were stolen), but the investigations are still ongoing. We’re not able to valuate the property stolen at this time.”

He said the victims and others living along the road raised concerns and provided evidence for law enforcement.

“There have been people that have turned over surveillance footage, and other people have indicated they had seen the person in the area. At some point, Richland Township (police) put it on their Facebook page and people responded, seeing an individual that met the description of the defendant in the area,” Flanagan said. “Some items were recovered. … Some items that were recovered were found in his vehicle, based on investigation from law enforcement.”

Flanagan said his office is aware of the violative nature of this offense, as well as the potential danger of entering an occupied residence.

“It is something that we take very seriously, because anytime somebody burglarizes a residence, the trust is lost,” he said.

He said felonies of the third degree carry a maximum sentence of three years each, and the maximum sentence for a fourth-degree felony is one-and-a-half years.
