FAIRS, FESTIVALS & CARNIVALS: Exhibits, rides, food and music at West Alexander Fair

WEST ALEXANDER, Pa. — The 116th annual West Alexander Fair, slated Sept. 4-9, is a true country fair featuring livestock and agricultural exhibits along with plenty of entertainment in the form of carnival rides, live music, food and more.

Barb Reed, secretary for the West Alexander Fair board, said the event “is truly an agricultural fair and it’s very family oriented.”

“It’s the end of summer and the kickoff to fall,” Reed said of the fair. “There are things like derby and tractor pulls. … There is something for everyone.

“There’s something in the grandstands, carnival rides. We have a great carnival company (Shaw and Sons Amusements).

“There is entertainment in the show tent every night. There are 4-H and FFA shows every evening. There’s great fair food.”

Reed, a self-described “fair rat,” said her family has been involved with the fair for generations, showing dairy cattle. She participated in 4-H during the fairs.

“My grandfather is still showing vegetables at 100 years old,” she noted.

Reed said the fair usually attracts about 18,000 people during the course of the week.

She said it is easy to reach the fair, as it is located just off Interstate 70 at 116 U.S. 40-W, West Alexander, Pennsylvania.
