Hoops for the Heart VFD to host third annual Heroes Day

Photo Provided Hoops for the Heart Volunteer Fire Department to host its 3rd annual Heroes Day 5K and Wellness event starting at 9:30 a.m. on Sept. 14 at Shadow Lake RV Park and Campground. Along with the race, the event will feature a family-friendly obstacle course.

WOODSFIELD -- Hoops for the Heart VFD, a basketball tournament that provides vital health screenings and heart health awareness to Monroe County residents, will host its third annual Heroes Day 5K and Wellness event starting at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Shadow Lake RV Park and Campground.

The event will honor first responders and raise money for free annual health screenings for the community. Registration for the 5K trail walk/run is open from 7:30-8:30 a.m., and the race will begin at 9:30 a.m.

The 5K run/walk will be throughout the campgrounds and trails at Shadow Lake Resort with no roads. All 5K participants will receive a T-shirt, medal and wristband for entry.

The event will also feature a 1-mile Kids Fun Run that will take place after the 5K. Medals and wristbands will be given to all the children who participate.

The event will also feature the annual VFD water battle. According to the Hoops for Heart VFD, the event is a crowd favorite. Those who attend the event can also participate in a family-friendly obstacle course.

The Lewisville Community VFD will provide chicken dinners, and local vendors will be set up at the event.

Hoops for the Heart VFD - formed by Casey Lohrey after the unexpected deaths of her uncle, Lewisville Volunteer Fire Department Chief Greg Baker, and brother-in-law, Bryn Lohrey of the Woodsfield Fire Department, from cardiac events -- will also host a raffle at the event. Raffle items include a Ruger American Ranch Rifle 6.5 Grendel donated by Modern Home & Hardware, a two-night stay at Shadow Lake Resort cabins donated by Shadow Lake Campground and Resort, a 36-inch Blackstone grill donated by Eastern Ohio Trophy Whitetails and Tim and Tina Jones, a Super Speedway kid's inflatable water slide/pool, a kayak donated by Bob and Tracy Blackstone and a 7-inch Amazon Fire Kids tablet. Those who wish to participate in the raffle can purchase one ticket for $10 or three for $20.

Those who wish to participate in the event can purchase tickets on eventbrite.com. Hoops for Heart VFD encourages attendees to bring lawn chairs and blankets for the all-day event.

Shadow Lake RV Park and Campground is located at 34847 Miltonsburg-Calais Road, Woodsfield.

Hoops for Heart VFD is a basketball tournament where teams from local volunteer fire departments face off. The organization provides screenings and heart health awareness for little to no cost.
