ST. CLAIRSVILLE -- The city's light and power department has marked Public Power Week -- #PublicPowerWeek -- this past Monday through Sunday, Oct. 1-7, along with more than 2,000 other community-owned, not-for-profit electric utilities that collectively provide electricity to 49 million Americans.
Don Smithberger, director of general services of the light and power department, said it was a time to consider everything that goes into keeping the lights on.
"Public Power Week celebrates the community-owned electricity that the light and power department provides to our community," Smithberger said. "Public power puts the people of the city of St. Clairsville first, and Public Power Week gives us the chance to emphasize the advantages of locally grown, locally owned power to our citizens."
Today St. Clairsville's light and power department has seven employees and four generators, emergency power plants, and two substations. It serves 3,155 residential customers and 300 commercial customers.
"Our service is reliable and safe, and we take pride in serving our friends and neighbors," Smithberger said "The light and power department is proud to have served St. Clairsville for 132 years."
