Flanagan to be Bethesda’s mayor again

BETHESDA — Robert Flanagan was elected mayor with 229 votes to challenger Linda Reeves’ 112 votes on Tuesday.

A total of 341 of Bethesda’s 797 voters, or 44.67%, turned out to cast ballots, according to unofficial vote totals announced by the Belmont County Board of Elections.

Flanagan had served a prior term as mayor from 2000-03 but had been voted out of office after breaking a tie vote among council members in the then-controversial move to build the current municipal building.

After Mayor Samantha Burkhead had decided not to run for a second term, Flanagan decided to run again. He could not be contacted following news of the election results on Tuesday, but in prior interviews he spoke about his accomplishments during his term in 2000, including building a skate park and removing numerous dilapidated cars.

He has said he would also focus on cleaning up and beautifying the village.

Flanagan is a lifetime resident of Bethesda and has said he will bring communications, problem-solving and managerial experience to the table. He has worked as a coal miner in the 1970s. He also worked as a gravedigger and owned a heating business. He later worked as a foreman in a coal mine.

He can often be found engaged in community service activities, including visiting nursing homes to play music and standing at attention in five area cemeteries when a veteran is buried. He also stands at attention in his coal mining uniform when coal miners are buried. He has donated his time installing a heating system in the community center.
