Police: One killed in Moundsville trailer fire

MOUNDSVILLE — A Moundsville woman died in a trailer fire on Ohio Street in Moundsville on Monday, according to Marshall County Sheriff Bill Helms.

Deborah Pifko, 63, died in the blaze, Helms said. Pifko’s roommate, Rhonda West, fled before the fire took down the entire structure, according to Helms. West was treated for injuries by medics at the scene and then “transported for further treatment,” the sheriff said.

The fire began “a few minutes after 10 a.m.,” Helms said. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire within 10 to 15 minutes, as the blaze was contained to the trailer.

“The fire did not take very long to put out,” Helms noted. “The whole trailer was taken down by the fire, except for the floor and a little bit of the sidewalls that remained intact.”

The Moundsville Fire Department, Moundsville Volunteer Fire Department, Glen Dale Volunteer Fire Department, Marshall County EMS and the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department were present at the scene.

The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office and the West Virginia State Fire Marshal have launched an investigation into what caused the fire. Helms does not suspect foul play was involved, citing that in the “early stages” of the investigation, the fire looks to have “originated in the kitchen.”

“I don’t anticipate our investigation taking a long time,” Helms added. “Within a week or two, we should have a pretty good handle on what happened.”
