STEUBENVILLE –Steubenville police have released the identity of one of the two victims of Friday’s shooting in the 1300 block of Maryland Avenue.

Police Chief Ken Anderson said Ja’Zeric Birden, 18, was pronounced dead at the scene. The name of the second victim, also 18, “is not being released at this time pending further investigation,” he said.

“At this point in the investigation it appears that there was some sort of an altercation between these two young men,” Anderson said. “We believe that they were both armed at the time of the incident (and) at some point during this altercation there’s an exchange of gunfire and they’re both shot.”

He said the second victim is “currently in a Pittsburgh-area hospital, where he’s receiving treatment for his injuries.”
