Structural safety issues suspends operations at Mingo Junction post office

MINGO JUNCTION — All retail and delivery operations have been suspended since Tuesday at the Mingo Junction Post Office because of structural safety issues.

Naddia Dhalai, a communications representative with the United States Postal Service, said Thursday that the office, located at 679 Commercial St., was closed because it has sustained ceiling and roof damage and will remain shut down “until necessary repairs are completed.”

“We are working with the landlord and a reopening date has not been determined,” Dhalai said. “We will notify customers when repairs are completed.”

All operations for the Mingo Junction office have been moved to the Steubenville Post Office at 150 N. Third St. Post office box customers can pick up their mail at the Steubenville office, and customers can find retail services at that office or other USPS locations.

The Steubenville Post Office confirmed that mail delivery services will continue as normal for Mingo Junction residents, with the Mingo Junction staff working out of the Steubenville office.

Hours of operation for retail, drop shipments and the business mail entry unit for the Steubenville office are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 8:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

Mayor Judy Ruckman said the office’s closing will make it harder for village residents to access post office functions.

The post office benefits the village by providing employee and revenue taxes, she said.

Village Councilwoman Pat Cramblett, meanwhile, called the closing a setback for Mingo Junction residents’ schedules.

“I’m hoping this gets resolved quickly for the residents. In Mingo, there are a lot of elderly people, and for them to have to travel to Steubenville just to pick up their mail is sad.”
