Rotary fundraiser features mentalist and benefits King’s Daughters

WHEELING — The Rotary Club of Wheeling has named King’s Daughters Child Care as the beneficiary of its annual spring fundraiser, and this year the event promises to be an amazingly magical night to remember.

The Rotary Club’s fundraiser this year will feature Wheeling’s own internationally known illusionist Craig Karges, who will perform at 7:30 p.m. May 16 at The West at Stratford Springs.

Officials from the Wheeling Rotary Club were joined by Karges and Jamie Remp, executive director of King’s Daughters Child Care, on Tuesday to announce this year’s big spring fundraiser.

“For me personally, this means a lot,” Remp said, noting that King’s Daughters Child Care is currently undergoing a multimillion-dollar expansion and renovation to its facility in East Wheeling. “It shows that the community backs child care and our organization. Just for me, I was very overwhelmed that they chose King’s Daughters.”

Remp said the expansion is going to be about a $2.4 million investment, and they have already raised about $2.2 million.

“We’re just shy of about $200,000,” she said, noting that the groundbreaking for the expansion was just held on March 18. “It’s a nine-month build, so by mid-December or the end of the year, it should be finished.”

Daniel Young, president of the Wheeling Rotary Club, said the event will be fun for everyone and will support a very worthy cause in the community.

“This year we chose King’s Daughters because of the need for child care here locally and across the country,” Young said. “As a new father to a 7-month-old, it is not lost on us the need for child care in the community, and we would love to support a local organization with their building and renovation this spring.”

There is limited seating to this year’s event, with only 200 seats available for a very intimate setting for the show. Rotary officials noted that this new spring fundraiser is being held in lieu of the Taste of the Market, which has been a popular fundraising event for Rotary over the past several years.

“We decided to take a different spin, and we wanted to host a new charity fundraiser that was a little different,” Young said. “We’re so pleased to have Craig come and perform. If you haven’t been to one of his shows, he is literally amazing. You’ll have your mind blown.”

Karges said he typically has only about two shows in the Ohio Valley each year, and he was happy to help when Rotary officials proposed this special event.

“It’s an interesting show,” Karges said, noting that the performance will include crowd favorites and some new feats that will dazzle audience members who are new to his act as well as those who have seen him many times. “I’m a local guy, but I travel all over the world performing as a mentalist and illusionist. So it’s all audience interaction and audience participation. It’s a weird and unusual type of show full of amazing and magical happenings.”

Sponsorships are needed to make the most out of this fundraiser, Rotary officials said. Every donation will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the Ann Sonneborn Charitable Foundation. For sponsorship information, call Betsy Bethel-McFarland at 304-280-6212 or email piperbetsy@yahoo.com.

Donations are also accepted, and tickets are available now, so Rotary officials invite everyone to get them “before they disappear.” Tickets are $50 for adults and $35 for those ages 12 and under. VIP tickets are available for $125 and include hors d’oeuvres, a cocktail and access to a meet-and-greet with Karges. There will be a 50/50 raffle, and a cash bar will be available before and after the show.
