WHEELING — With the unofficial kick-off of summer coming this weekend, several local swimming pools will be opening for the season.

Amy Jacob, program coordinator for the city of Wheeling Parks and Recreation Department, said the city of Wheeling’s public swimming pools are slated to open June 1.

The facilities include Wheeling Island’s Bridge Street Park, South Wheeling’s 36th Street pool, East Wheeling’s Grandview pool and splash pad and Warwood’s Garden Park.

“All the pools have been sandblasted and painted,” Jacob said. “We have plenty of lifeguards. A lot of the same kids come back each year so we didn’t have any problems finding lifeguards.”

The city pools are open daily from noon to 6 p.m. The rec department’s annual learning to swim program for children 3 years old and older also will be available June 17-28 at Bridge Park Pool and July 8-19 at Grandview Pool. The cost is $10. People can pay online at https://wheelingwv.myrec.com or in person the first day.

Wheeling Park’s swimming pool is now open and will be open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily during the season. The waterslide opens at noon daily. The entry fee for adults is $8.50; children 4-12 years old is $7.50; and waterslide $2.50 for a single ride.

Oglebay Park’s outdoor swimming pool and splash pad at the Crispin Center is slated to open today for the season. Its hours of operation are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on opening day.

In Moundsville, Grand Vue Park’s aquatic center is slated to open today. This will be the second season for the new pool, which features slides, a climbing board, basketball hoops and more. Its hours are noon to 6 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday-Sunday. Entry prices range from $12 to free depending one’s age.

Also in Moundsville, the city’s Four Seasons Pool, which is indoors but has glass doors that open, is open and its adjoining splash pad is also now open for the summer season.

“On June 1, hours change somewhat. Private parties are not held on Sundays so the pool and splash pad is open from noon to 7 p.m. every Sunday,” said Moundsville City Manager Rick Healy. “This will be the third year for the splash pad, and it continues to attract new patrons. This year, we have an expanded concession stand, we also added new lounge chairs for the outside area.”

Entry fees include children 3 years old and younger, free; ages 4-12 years old, $3; ages 13-54 years old, $5; and 55 years old and older, $4. The price includes use of the splash pad.

The city of Benwood’s swimming pool is slated to open for the season on Monday. To celebrate the opening and in observance of Memorial Day, people can enter for free. Free hot dogs, chips and pop will be given out from 11:30-2:30 p.m. The pool will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily this summer.

The city of Glen Dale’s swimming pool is set to open for the summer on Saturday. Its hours of operation will be 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday-Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sundays. The cost to enter is $6 for 13-54 year olds; $5 for seniors and those 12 years old and younger; and free for children 3 years old and younger. The Glen Dale pool is slated to offer free swimming and light refreshments on Monday in observance of Memorial Day. A service is slated for 11 a.m. at the city park.
