West Elementary Memorial Day observance is set for May 21

ADENA — Buckeye West Elementary School and Adena American Legion Post 525 will present “An American Salute” during their annual Memorial Day remembrance on May 21.

The event gets underway at 1:30 p.m. in the school gymnasium with Mark Smith of Cadiz, a U.S. Army veteran and current truancy specialist at Harrison Hills City Schools, as the guest speaker.

Students will also perform readings and a bevy of patriotic songs from “Yankee Doodle Dandy” to “America the Beautiful” while winners of the “What Memorial Day Means to Me” essay contest will also be recognized. Recipients include Mia Kovalski, first place; Isabella Glauser, second; and Addison Brown, third. They will receive certificates and commendations from Post Commander Dirk Harkins and Past Commander Roger Sliva. Other highlights include the post Color Guard, a rifle salute and sixth grade band members performing a rendition of “Taps.”
