The Ohio Valley to have Independence Day celebrations

MARTINS FERRY — Firework displays will be happening across the Ohio Valley for this year’s Independence Day celebrations.

For those who want to celebrate the holiday outside of their homes, different celebrations are happening from Belmont County to Harrison County that residents can attend with family and friends.

St. Clairsville kicks off its Independence Day celebrations with its free community event June 29, beginning at 4 p.m. There will be food trucks, face painting, vendors and inflatables, with fireworks following at dusk. The event will take place at 102 Fair Ave., St. Clairsville.

The city is also holding another event put together by Mayor Kathryn Thalman, Administrative Assistant Jennifer McMillen and police Officer Greg Clark on Saturday, June 29. Beginning at 11 a.m., a Patriotic Bike Parade will take place, with registration starting at 10:30. A portion of Main Street will be closed for kids ages birth to 15 to come to this event to decorate bikes, scooters, wagons and more with patriotic colors.

John Warnick from Free Bike Depot in Wheeling refurbishes bikes and gives them away and will be present at the event. Participants are welcome to bring their own bikes as well. All non-motorized vehicles are welcome.

The event is free of charge. McMillen said all the supplies for the parade are donated, from the prizes to the lemonade.

This is an event that kids can look forward to for the holiday, using their creativity to decorate the bikes and athleticism to ride in the parade, she said.

“There was a girl last year. She looked like a full picnic table. It was adorable,” McMillen said. “We’ve had kids dress up as policemen, and it’s been adorable. It’s been so much fun.”

Martins Ferry’s Independence Day community event is July 6 at the city park. Free inflatables, food trucks and free swim will all be offered. The event begins at noon and runs until the fireworks display at dusk.

Entertainment will also be at the park, with different musicians and bands performing all day. When there is no musician or band performing, there will be a DJ on the stage, so music will play all day long, said John Davies, mayor of Martins Ferry.

“It’s going to be a great time for everybody,” Davies said. “We put on a fireworks display. It’s just a great thing for the citizens and for people in the valley, and plus I’m going to sit on this (water) dump. So if you want to see me get all wet, you can come and spend some money.”

The Barnesville Memorial Park is hosting a long day of activities July 6. Free swimming at the Park Pool will be offered from noon to 6 p.m., which will have concessions that offer an extended menu. Food vendors, such as Cowgirl Country Fixins, Shamrock Tropical Snow, Hudson’s Brickoven Pizza and Ice Cream, Dirusso’s Sausage and Travelin Tom’s Coffee, will be at the park.

AVC Communications, a radio station, will be doing a live radio feed at the park from 7-9 p.m, where attendees can win prizes.

Other activities offered for the public include a bounce house, a 5-foot Jenga game and corn hole. At the park amphitheater, entertainment will be provided. Valley Sphinx, 2 or More and a DJ from Shamrock Entertainment will all perform from 5 p.m. to dusk, which is when the fireworks display will happen.

Fireworks launched from the Barnesville Airport will light up the sky at the Barnesville Memorial Park to finish the night.

With entertainment, food, a travel baseball tournament and other activities, the day will be full of a lot to do, Roger Deal, Barnesville village administrator, said.

Zion Retreat & RV Park in Flushing will be hosting a day of events as well on July 5 from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. The public is welcome, and activities will include food trucks, ziplining at $5 per zip or $25 for an all-day pass and fireworks at dusk.

“Zion is a very beautiful area,” Olivia Wortman, summer office employee, said. “It’s very homey, and I think it would just be a good way to get people in this area, or even from wherever they’re coming from, together, and I think it’ll be very nice.”

Monroe County’s Independence Day celebration will be held in Woodsfield at the Monroe Memorial Park. A parade and fireworks will take place beginning at 6 p.m. July 3.
