Gas leak affects West Liberty Wednesday morning

The town of West Liberty found itself in a short shelter-in-place situation Wednesday morning after a natural gas leak occurred Wednesday morning at West Liberty University.

As crews were working on power lines on WLU’s campus early Wednesday morning, they hit a high pressure gas line near West Family Stadium. The town went under a shelter-in-place advisory early Wednesday, including WLU and West Liberty Elementary.

The advisory was lifted shortly after gas company crews started repairing the line, though several buildings on the university’s campus remained closed through the morning as a precaution.

College Hall, the ASRC, the Fine Arts Building and Arnett Hall all were closed temporarily Wednesday morning. The ASRC, Fine Arts Building and Arnett Hall reopened before noon, followed by College Hall. The entire campus was open again by Wednesday afternoon.

At West Liberty Elementary, school officials turned off the school’s heating and cooling systems as a precaution, but instruction went as planned and students were not sent home.
