SHADYSIDE — Kirke’s Ice Homemade Ice Cream will be coming to Shadyside along with a coffee shop in the same building.
Kirke’s ice cream and the new coffee shop will be different stores housed in the same building. The coffee shop will be called Coffee Central.
The ice cream and coffee shops will be located at the old Chase Bank at 4001 Central Ave. The hours of the ice cream shop will remain the same as those of the St. Clairsville location – noon to 9 p.m. in the summertime. The coffee shop hours are still to be determined.
Mark Porterfield, Kirke Porterfield’s son, will be operating the shops and wants to open the coffee shop sometime in the winter with the ice cream shop to follow in mid March when the weather warms up. The shops will also have a drive-through for convenience, just like the former Chase Bank had. Mark also noted that through the off season, Kirke’s Homemade Ice Cream will still sell its products by the gallon.
Porterfield thinks Shadyside is a great village with great people and wants to bring coffee and ice cream to the community.
“I really started a few years ago, really got into the ice cream a lot,” Mark said. “The past couple of years I really grew passionate about ice cream. Everything that I did was ice cream, and I’m the next generation of it, so my goal is to show everybody and have everybody try our ice cream.”
For now, Mark said it will be just him working at the shops, but eventually he would like to bring in his brother Doug Porterfield to help once he grows his shops.
Mark will provide homemade ice cream and coffee, keeping it simple and not adding food to the mix. He said if he does bring in food, the menu would be similar to a Starbucks, where people can pick up coffee and a muffin on their way to work.
“A big thing that we want to serve is smiles and joy,” he said.
Mark is hoping opening these shops brings the community together by providing a place of gathering and to hang out and see smiles walking past the place.
Mark wanted to grow Kirke’s name by adding another store somewhere. He said Mike Derosa of Shadyside, who owns businesses and plays a big part in the community, has been helping him through the process and had the opportunity for him to bring the new shops there.
Mark said his and Derosa’s goal is to add something new to Shadyside because the community could use something different, like a new coffee and ice cream shop.
He is excited to open the shops because it is “his first step in the door,” breaking away from the St. Clairsville location. Mark thinks these shops will bring jobs for younger children and high schoolers.
“I really want to grow this name and this brand,” he said. “This is my first shop, and it’s not the last.”
